I love being a citizen of the United States of America and having the honor to be alive as we celebrate America 250. Our form of government was a grand experiment that has succeeded for a quarter of a millennium through great leadership, mediocre leadership and poor leadership. We have gone to war to save the world from evil and we’ve gone to war for reasons many can’t figure out. We have been the economic engine of the world since the industrial revolution. I am proud of our country and what it represents even when I am not proud of our leadership or many of the people in our country who continually put down the greatest country to have ever existed.
I was taught to love our country from birth. My uncle Jim was killed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He lied about his age and enlisted early to defend our nation against the Axis of Evil. Another uncle fought against Hitler’s regime in Europe. My dad, who was medically unable to serve, took a train from Ohio all the way to Washington state to work on battleships in dry dock. My mother worked in a munitions plant making ammo for the war effort. My family was all in to help the United States war effort.
Now, through the Family Tree app and because of some very industrious people, I have found that my great-grandfather x3 fought for the Union in the Civil War and I am honored to say my great-grandfather x5 was a scout and spy for the Continental Army under the direction of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Patriotism and love of country run deep in our family.
My mom, dad, grandma and grandfather were all democrats. I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats during my life. My parents and grandparents wouldn’t know or understand the Democratic party as it has evolved today. By the same token, they would despise Donald Trump as well. It amazes me that we had so many brave and intelligent people come together at the same time to found our country and now we have a leadership void. Everyone is out for oneself – power and greed fill the halls of Congress and the Executive Branch. If we are to survive another 250 years, something has to change. Term limits, and viable candidates from other parties are essential to getting us back on track. Our founding fathers knew the threats of a two-party system and career politicians – and they were right.
I hope that at least for one day we can put politics aside and be thankful we live in the greatest country on Earth. God Bless the United States of America!
